M. B.'s  debut poetry collection The Lame God was awarded First Place in the 16th Annual
May Swenson Poetry Award by Utah State University Press in 2013. She
was awarded the
2014 FLP Chapbook Prize by Finishing Line Press for her poetry collection Advantages of
Believing.  In 2011 she was awarded the 2011 American Poet Prize by The American Poetry
l for her poem "1-800-THE-LOST". And, in 2012 she was awarded the Robert Frost
Award for her poem "
The Arrangement". She is currently  Florida's Volusia County Poet
and was a 2015 Poet Laureate nominee for the state of Florida.

Her poems have been published in

2013 46er Prize for Poetry, the American Poetry Journal's American Poet Prize for 2011, the
Spoon River Poetry Review Editors’ Prize,  the Annie Finch Prize for Poetry, the Vachel
Lindsay Poetry Award, the  Penelope Niven Creative Nonfiction Award, and Finalist for the
Rita Dove Poetry Award, the Lynda Hull Memorial Poetry Prize, the Lumina Prize of Sarah
Lawrence College, the Robert Penn Warren Award, the William Faulkner Poetry Prize, the
Richard Snyder Memorial Poetry Prize, the Muriel Craft Bailey Memorial Award, the Erskine J.
Poetry Prize, and The Robert Frost Award.

Academic awards include the Harvard University Danforth Prize for Excellence in Teaching,
the Radcliffe Prize for Literary Scholarship, the Brown University Elmer Smith Award for
Teaching, the Yeats International Summer School Graduate Fellowship, the Luso-American
FLAD Scholarship, and Highest Honors from Williams College for her poetry.

She has worked as a speechwriter for a state senator, as a reporter for a daily newspaper,  
as a magazine editor for a major publisher, and as a reader and book reviewer for
Spoon River Poetry Review
. She has authored several literary reviews, compiled a text book
supplement for Humanities courses titled
Primary Sources, and is a contributor to the book,
Mapping the Line: Poets on Teaching. She served on the Board of Trustees for Goddard
College in Vermont for several years.

She holds a Masters degree in Comparative Literature from Harvard University, a Masters in
Teaching from Brown University, the M.F.A. from Goddard College, and a B.A. from Williams
College.  She has taught literature and writing at Harvard University, Rollins College, the
University of Central Florida, Valencia Community College, and is currently Associate
Professor of Humanities at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, Florida.
